As the “sequester” approaches, many of the most strident voices in Washington have urged few if any cuts to the Pentagon budget.
But even after huge Pentagon budget cuts and the ending of two recent wars, spending by the Pentagon would still be higher, when adjusted for inflation, than it was during most of the Vietnam era and the Cold War.
It’s important for our Sens. Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin to look closely at the possibility of cutting some of the wasteful, unaudited Pentagon spending in favor of real “homeland security” priorities such as education and developing alternative energy jobs. The Pentagon needs to share in efforts to reduce the deficit.
