The bipartisan budget agreement will take the pressure off the Pentagon when they were finally beginning to make difficult but necessary choices to rein in the out-of-control defense budget, according to an op-ed by Ethan Rosenkranz, POGO’s national security policy analyst.

The article, published in The Hill, argues that the Pentagon’s budget has become riddled with waste as the U.S. has more than doubled defense spending since 1998.

How much waste and excessive spending is included in the Pentagon’s budget? Consider this: Currently, the Pentagon has 86 major defense systems under development.  Those systems are estimated to cost a combined $1.6 trillion to develop and procure. When compared to the original cost estimates, those 86 programs have grown in cost by over $400 billion.
